Trojans Lose Winning Streak in Ranked Road Loss

DENTON, Texas – The Troy women's tennis team saw its 12-match winning streak come to an end on Friday in a 4-1 loss to nationally-ranked No.74 North Texas. Troy will close its regular season tomorrow with a 10 a.m. match against Middle Tennessee on a neutral court.
Troy (16-5) suffers its first loss since a 4-3 setback at UAB on February 17, doing so against a North Texas (13-5) that is the reigning Sun Belt champion. The loss snaps the nation's third longest winning streak.
“Today is the first time we had a legitimate team come after us with a target on our back,” Troy head coach Eric Hayes said. “We did not handle the pressure of that well.”
The Trojans had a chance to take the opening point. After splitting first and third doubles with North Texas, the Trojans were up 6-3 in second doubles, but lost 8-6, giving the opening point to the Mean Green.
The third doubles loss was the first of the season by Anja Cosovic and Candela Munoz Giron who entered as the nation's 90th-ranked doubles pair.
“We had the doubles point in hand and didn't finish,” Hayes said. “We won a few matches in a row, got a doubles national ranking and let everyone pat us on the back. Today was nice slap in the face.”
Hannah Toro picked up Troy's lone win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at fourth singles. In the matches that did not finish, Cosovic was winning in the third set and Troy's Rosaura Ramirez-Vega was about to begin a third set. Complete results are below.
Troy next takes on Middle Tennessee on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Denton, Texas, in the regular season finale for both teams. The Sun Belt Championships begin on Thursday in Lafayette, La., with the official seedings expected to be announced on Monday.
