Trojans Rebound, Dominate Regular Season Finale
4/13/2013 2:15:00 PM | Tennis (W)
DENTON, Texas – The Troy women's tennis team rebounded from Friday's streak-snapping loss and dominated Middle Tennessee on Saturday in a 6-1, neutral court win. The match marks the regular season finale for Troy as the Trojans get set for next week's Sun Belt Championships.
“We came out today and played much better than yesterday,” Troy head coach Eric Hayes said. “To contend for a conference championship you must be so mentally sharp. We will see where we are next week in the conference tournament.”
Troy (17-5, 5-1) will enter the tournament having won 13 of 14 matches after seeing its 12-match winning streak snapped by reigning Sun Belt champion North Texas on Friday.
The Trojans put that loss behind them early with a convincing sweep of the doubles point on Saturday, beginning with nationally-ranked Anja Cosovic and Candela Munoz Giron at third doubles. After losing their first match of the year on Friday, the 90th-ranked pair won 8-0 on Saturday as Troy dropped just six total games in doubles play.
Troy was just as impressive in singles play as the Trojans cruised past Middle Tennessee (10-10, 3-2), picking up wins in five of the six singles matches. The Blue Raiders lone point came at third singles where Troy's Hannah Toro was forced to retire with an injury.
Troy won four of the five remaining matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by Munoz Giron at fifth singles. Rosaura Ramirez Vega posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles while Karoline Grymel clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at first singles.
Lyubov Dorofeeva at second singles and Cosovic at fourth singles rounded out the scoring for Troy. Complete results are below.
The Trojans return to the court next week in Lafayette, La., for the Sun Belt Championships. Official seeds are expected to be announced on Monday as the tournament begins on Thursday. The top four seeds will receive a bye into Friday's quarterfinals.
