Troy Men Make it a Sweep of Jacksonville State

TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team endured a near two-hour rain delay on its way to knocking off Jacksonville State, 4-2, at the Lunsford Tennis Complex on Tuesday. The win came on the heels of the Troy women defeating Jacksonville State 6-0.

The Troy men (3-6) and Jacksonville State (2-9) agreed to play singles matches first in an effort to beat an eminent rain storm. Five of the matches were completed before the rain came, but neither team had the necessary four points for a win as Troy led 3-2 entering the delay.

With Tadju Davies leading in the third set of the sixth singles match for Troy, the entire Trojan team and coaching staff had to work to dry the courts in order for Davies to finish his match.

“This was a total team effort,” Troy head coach Eric Hayes said. “The entire men's team and some of the women's team put in a heck of an effort to dry the courts for Tadju to finish off the match.”

After a rain delay that totaled one hour and 45 minutes, Davies was able to finish off JSU's Felipe Watanabe, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 to give the Trojans the 4-2 win. The match ended at 6:15 p.m. after starting at 1:30 p.m.

A trio of three set wins prior to the delay set the stage for Davies, starting with Anas Rouchdi's 6-2, 6-4 win at first singles.

The Trojans also won at third singles where Sami Ghorbel won 6-3, 6-3, and at fourth singles where Daniel Bustamante won 6-4, 7-5. However, Jacksonville State didn't give in as the Gamecocks won three-set matches at second and fifth singles to force the post-rain drama.

The Trojans have now won two straight as they prep for matches on Saturday in Montgomery, Ala., against Alabama State and Alabama A&M.

“The guys are really starting to learn from their earlier setbacks,” Hayes said.
