NEW ORLEANS – Troy junior Danny Collins was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Battling one of the top weekend pitching rotations in the country and frigid weather conditions – temperatures in the 40s all weekend – Collins put on an offensive show. The right fielder hit .636 (7-for-11) with a double, two home runs, five RBIs and four runs scored as Troy took the weekend series from No. 24 Southern Miss. Collins put up a 1.273 slugging percentage, a .692 on-base percentage and a 1.965 OPS against a starting rotation that entered the weekend with a combined 1.25 ERA.
Collins, a native of Niceville, Fla., hit .500 with five runs scored, a double, three home runs and eight RBIs over Troy's five games last week. On the year, Collins is batting at a .526 clip with four doubles, two triples, four home runs and a 1.663 OPS.
Collins is the first Troy player to earn Sun Belt Player of the Week honors twice in a season since Steven Felix won the award twice in 2010.
The Trojans (8-3) return to action Tuesday night at Samford (8-5). First pitch from Joe Lee Griffin Field is set for 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Troy IMG Sports Network with local coverage on 94.7 FM in Troy and free worldwide coverage online at TroyTrojans.com.
