MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy women's golf team, accompanied by the Sun Belt's No. 1 golfer in Sofia Bjorkman, will open its spring slate Monday as they travel to Mobile to compete in the 11th Annual Lady Jaguar Invitational.
The women enter the heavy spring schedule with some momentum after winning one event last fall and finishing in the top tier of all four of their tournaments. In their third tournament of the fall, the Trojans won the Courtyard Classic back in October, an event where Troy's Taylor McGraw finished regulation tied for the lead. McGraw, who was competing as an individual, finished second in a playoff, as the Trojans picked up the team title en route to a second place Sun Belt standing at the end of the fall.
Bjorkman, who enters her final stretch of play as a Troy golfer, carries a ton of momentum and the first place conference ranking into Monday's action. The Vanersborg, SW, native enters with a 73.50 stroke average and will look to improve on her best season finish of T4th (a feat she accomplished twice). Through four tournaments, Bjorkman has finished in the top-10 of each of those – T4th (twice), T7th and T6th. She enters the in-state tournament with a slight lead over UALR's Emelie Westrup, who is averaging a 73.80 thus far.
Troy's No. 2 golfer, Langley Vannoy, also enters in the top-10 in the Sun Belt (76.25 stroke average). The Pensacola, Fla., native's best finish of the fall also came at the JU Courtyard Classic, where she carded a tie for 10th.
Taylor McGraw and Sara Fennvik have been nearly identical in terms of scoring thus far, as McGraw holds a 77.58 average while Fennvik sits at 77.64. Those numbers equate to nearly identical rankings in the conference as well, as McGraw is 26th while Fennvik is 27th.
Sydney Conrad, Brooke Spinks and Kalyn Hudson are all in the mix as well, as those three enter with averages of 79.17, 77.33 and 82.33, respectively.
The Trojans will face-off against 13 teams including four from the Sun Belt. UALR, ranked No. 76 in the country by Golfstat.com, sits third in the league just behind Troy. Western Kentucky, ULM and South Alabama rank 7th, 8th, and 9th in the conference heading into the tournament. Other teams in the tournament include No. 84 Southern Miss, Alabama State, Eastern Kentucky, Jackson State, Jacksonville State, McNeese State, Mobile, Spring Hill and UAB.
In last year's event, Troy finished fifth after completing the tournament with a two round total of 616. The Jaguars of South Alabama enter as the defending champions after they carded a two round total of 607 a year ago.
The tournament will take place at the Azalea City Golf Club, a par-72, 6,051-yard venue. The tournament format will feature 54 holes with 36 to be played on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday. Monday's action will begin at 8:30 a.m., while the final round will also begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Live stats from the event will be available through www.GolfStat.com.
