TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team opens up its home schedule by hosting the 2013 Troy Subway Invitational starting Friday, February 15, as Evansville, North Florida and Virginia Tech travel to the Troy Softball Complex for the three-day tournament.
The Trojans (2-2) begin play at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon against the Evansville Purple Aces (0-0) and will wrap up the tournament's first day against North Florida (4-1) at 5:30 p.m.
Troy wraps up pool play against Virginia Tech (4-1) at 1 p.m. on Saturday. After the Trojans and Hokies face off, tournament play begins as the top seed will face the fourth seed at 3 p.m. Following conclusion of that game, the second seed and third seed will battle at 5:30 p.m. The winner of these two games will advance and play in the tournament championship on Sunday at 1 p.m., while the losers face off in the consolation game at 11 a.m.
After picking up two wins at the Bulldog Kickoff Classic last weekend in Starkville Miss., Troy's midweek contest at no. 24 Florida State was postponed to Feb. 28 because of rain. The Trojans defeated Georgia State and Tennessee State last weekend, but fell to Mississippi State and SIU-Edwardsville.
Senior catcher/designated player Hannah Renn picked up all-tournament honors last weekend by leading Troy at the plate. The Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., native hit .462 (6-fo-13) with a home run, two doubles and three RBIs to start the season.
Along with Renn, junior utility player Kacie McAllister also was named to the Bulldog Kickoff Classic's All-Tournament team after recording four hits and making starts behind the plate, at first base and right field for the Trojans.
Freshman third baseman Chandler Griffin drove in four runs against Georgia State and enters play this weekend with a .455 batting average. Junior second baseman Taylor Smartt has hit safely in Troy' first four games in 2013.
In the circle, Rachel Rigney picked up her first career win in a complete game performance against Tennessee State; while the freshman picked up her first career save by throwing the final three innings in Troy's win over Georgia State.
