TROY, Ala. – Rising sophomore bandit Tyler Roberts was first pick of the third annual Trojan Challenge draft which was held on Tuesday afternoon. The Troy University football team was drafted into 10 teams for the semester-long competition.
The Trojan Challenge is designed to raise accountability within the Troy football team. Players will be awarded points for a variety of different tasks including – community service, perfect class attendance, earning positive feedback from professors and for work in the weight room. Players and teams can also lose points for demonstrating poor accountability. Fans can keep up with the Trojan Challenge on Twitter by following @TroyChallenge.
“We had a tremendous amount of success with the Trojan Challenge last year,” assistant coach and Trojan Challenge coordinator Jeff Beckles said. “Our players performed better in the classroom, we made an impact in the Troy community and became closer as a football team because of it. The scores will be posted weekly so the players will know who is doing well, but also who is bringing the teams down which should add some peer pressure to the table as well.”
The competition will also involve a little fun for the players with the Trojan Olympics skills competition. The Trojan Olympics will include a bench press challenge, 3-point shooting contest, slam dunk contest, touchdown celebration contest and 4x100m relay. The indoor events for the Trojan Olympics will take place in Sartain Hall on Thursday, March 7, and the outdoor events will take place in Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday, April 25.
Defensive line coach Randy Butler took Roberts with the first pick of the draft. Running back Jared Lee, offensive lineman Evan McKissack, linebackers Eli Canton and Wayland Coleman-Dancer, tight end Jim Teknipp, wide receiver Felton Peyton, quarterback Corey Robinson, offensive lineman Dalton Bennett and Terrence Jones rounded out the first round selections.
The Trojans also started their bi-weekly Octagon workouts this week. The players begin the 10-station workout at 5:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. Some of the stations include 50-pound weighted hill runs, telephone pole carry, heavy jump ropes, ladder drills, box jumps and individual tug of wars.
