SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Trojans battled hard, picking up a late equalizer, but fell to Texas State, 2-1, in overtime in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Championships.
"That was a great game between two quality teams," said head coach Chris Bentley. "It's tough to lose like that but credit to Texas State and their crowd. It was a great atmosphere. We just conceded one too many corners in the end."
Texas State scored the game-winner in the 94th minute, with Maddie Nichols firing in a shot off of a corner.
The Trojans appeared to be down and out, but fought back late in the second half. Troy picked up the equalizer in the 81st minute, with Jasmine Fahrnbauer knocking in her first goal of the season. Fahrnbauer sent in a beautiful shot just out of the reach of the Texas State goalkeeper.
Madison Winter made six saves on the day, but faced 17 total shots on the day.
Necee Jennings fired eight shots on the night. Fahrnbauer, Jennings and Louis Cheng each had three shots on goal.
The Bobcats got the scoring started in the 64th minute as Gabbi Cottee headed in the cross from Nichols inside the 6-yard box. The Trojans had been riding a 353-minute shutout streak prior to that goal.
"It's important for me to recognize our seniors as they were all outstanding today in whatever role they took on," Bentley said. "They have been incredible for this team and are going to be a huge asset to whomever gets to work with them in their future endeavors."
