TROY, Ala. – As has been the case all season long, the Troy football team faces an opponent on the road who is playing at the top of its game. With road games at Arkansas State, Mississippi State, Duke, Western Kentucky and Louisiana-Lafayette in the rearview, the Trojans have been battled tested away from home this year.
Troy (5-5) travels to Oxford, Miss., for its final non-conference game of the season at Ole Miss (6-3) on Saturday. The Trojans will be looking to become bowl eligible while the Rebels are hoping to pad their bowl resume in the first meeting between the two clubs. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and the game will be televised by ESPNU.
"We need to change the last verse to these songs we've been singing lately and find a way to win some of these close games," Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. "We're trying to salvage something out of this season, which was against a tough schedule. We can still become bowl eligible and I believe if we can become bowl eligible we can go to a bowl."
Blakeney is dead on with his comments about close losses. Three of Troy's five losses this season have come by a touchdown or less and another was a one-possession game late in the fourth quarter. Dating back to last season, nine of Troy's 12 losses have been a one-possession game.
Troy senior quarterback Corey Robinson will look to make NCAA history on Saturday as he needs 172 passing yards to become just the fourth player in FBS history to throw for over 3,000 yards in four seasons. Only Timmy Chang (Hawai'i), Landry Jones (Oklahoma) and Kellen Moore (Boise State) have reached that milestone before.
"We just have to keep fighting these last two games," Robinson said. "We just have to go down there and hopefully outsmart them and put the ball in the end zone. Last week we got down there a bunch and had to kick field goals. That's not going to help us out this week, we're going to have to find a way to get in the end zone."
The Trojans will look for the big play against a Rebel defense that is allowing 380.4 yards and 25.4 points per game. Troy is no stranger to the big play with 10 passes over 50 yards this season, which is second best in the country behind Baylor. The Trojans are averaging 34.6 points and 478.5 yards of offense led by Robinson's arm, Eric Thomas' 11 receiving touchdowns and Jordan Chunn's NCAA best for a freshmen 11 rushing touchdowns.
The Rebels, who are in the midst of a six-game home stretch, have won three straight games after losing three straight. Ole Miss opened the season with a three-game win streak and its lone home loss of the season was a 41-38 setback to Texas A&M.
