TROY, Ala. – Saturday's 32-26 win over Western Kentucky was not only the fifth for the team this season, it was the 500th all-time victory for the Troy football program.
Troy began playing football in 1909 under coach Vergil Parks McKinley. Since that time, the program has won three national titles, 20 conference championships and had 33 players drafted by the National Football League.
"There have been a lot of people and players that had a lot to do with that," said Troy head coach Larry Blakeney, who has coached the team to 174 wins over 23 seasons. "I'm glad that we were around to take care of the benchmark, hopefully we can win some more and get back to a bowl game."
The first win in Troy history came over Edger School in 1909; the team has since played 175 different opponents in 92 seasons of football.
The program has been a member of five different conferences in four different divisions in its history. Troy transitioned to the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2001 and joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2004.
Veterans Memorial Stadium has been the home of numerous memorable victories en route to 500. Most notably, wins over Marshall (2003), Missouri (2004), Oklahoma State (2007) and Navy (2012). The Trojans have won 269 games at home.
"It's a huge accomplishment," said quarterback Corey Robinson. "We have a lot of tradition here and we're trying to keep that going every time we take the field."
Troy will go for win No. 501 against ULM on Thursday in a 6:30p.m. game at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
