TROY, Ala. – Former Troy track and field standout Martins Pildavs recently represented Troy University in multiple javelin throw competitions held throughout different sites in Europe.
Just one month after finishing 13th in the NCAA Division I Men's Javelin Throw Championships, Pildavs began competition in Belgium where he finished fourth with a 71 meter throw.
“Troy University is proud to have one of our own moving on to the next level,” track and field head coach Jill Lancaster said. “This story goes beyond all his accolades and accomplishments.”
The Latvian native's second competition was in Pergine, Italy where he finished third. He then finished off his summer with a win in Arco, Italy.
“Our program is blessed with a great javelin volunteer coach,” Lancaster said. “Former head coach Bob Lambert has had a tremendous impact on the development and success of our javelin program.”
The end of his trip to Europe proved to be the highlight, as he signed with the CUS Parma Athletic Club.
During his last season as a Trojan, Pildavs set a personal best with a 75.60 meter throw, which is a number he hopes future Troy javelin throwers will aim to beat.
“I am proud that I reached my personal best of 75.60 while I was a Troy Trojan and set the bar a bit higher,” Pildavs said. “I hope that it will give motivation for the next Troy javelin throwers to raise the bar even higher.”
Pildavs' stack of accomplishments date all the way back to his competitive days at Cloud County Community College, where he ranked in the top three in multiple events. In 2009, he placed third in the javelin throw at the NJCAA Championship. In 2010, he was named the NJCAA men's javelin national champion and also placed third in the hammer throw. During the same year, he was also named an All-American in the discus throw
Upon his arrival as a junior at Troy, Pildavs set a school record with a 73.32 meter javelin throw and ranked tenth in the 2011 NCAA Division I Qualifiers List. Since, he has broken the record twice and his distance of 75.60, set back on April 12 at South Alabama, currently stands as the school record.
Pildavs will finish his degree in the fall and graduate in December.
