Trojans Get Physical on Day Three of Fall Camp
8/4/2012 1:06:00 PM | Football
TROY, Ala. – The Troy football team put on pads for the first time this fall as they worked out in shoulder pads and helmets for three hours Saturday morning in Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Trojans will return to the practice field Sunday morning at 8:15 a.m. once again in shells before strapping on full pads for the first time on Monday.
Troy has won a share of five of the past six Sun Belt Conference titles and is the only school to represent the league in five bowl games. Troy has 11 more Sun Belt victories than any other school in the league since the Trojans joined the Sun Belt in 2004. The Trojans also have a Sun Belt leading 84 all-conference selections and 38 first team all-conference selections over that same time period.
Troy opens the 2012 season on Sept. 1 at in-state rival UAB in Legion Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. and the game will be televised live by Fox College Sports.
Season tickets for Troy's record six home games are available for purchase by logging on to TroyTrojans.com or by calling 1-877-878-WINS. Fans can also purchase tickets to Troy's six road games through the Troy ticket office.
Troy Head Coach Larry Blakeney
“We got a lot of good fundamental work on tacking and blocking with the gear on. It was a good morning. I think the defense sort of took advantage of the gear this morning and knocked people around a little bit and that's something good to see. They were energized and played with some emotion and some aggression and it sort of set the offense back. We'll see how it continues to go. We practice again in the morning (tomorrow) in gear and then we get to go in full gear on Monday. The main thing is the energy and the effort was great this morning. We have to keep taking care of the heat situation, although the good Lord took care of that for us today and gave us a good break on the weather.
On guys separating themselves on the depth chart
“You can see it even now. I thought (cornerback) Zach Miller made some strides this morning. All those guys who are new are really – even some of the young guys – starting to find their way. (Running back Brandon) Burks is sick today and he practiced and (wide receiver) Michael Lindsey is looking like he is catching on. They have some good guys who are older that can tutor them along and help coach them. I think we are going to get some help; certainly from the transfer guys and some of the new guys.

On the defensive intensity Saturday
“We came out firing on all cylinders today. We were really excited about getting in pads and getting after it today. I feel good about how we played as a defense today. I feel like we need to do a little bit better with the pass rush, but coverage wise I thought we were pretty good.
On the team's new attitude
“I feel like it has carried over a lot, especially during the early summer where we were focused on just being discipline. It's finishing your job and doing what you are supposed to do every single play. There is definitely a different feel this year.”
