TROY, Ala. – The Troy soccer team started the season off with a 5-3 win over in-state rival Alabama State at the Troy Soccer Complex on Friday. Five different Trojans scored on the day, while sophomore Chelsey Williams and junior Cecilia Thorngren paced the team with one goal and two assists each.
Troy got off to a shaky start, as Alabama State's Anastasia McCleary scored just 5:30 into the game off a chip from the right corner of the 18-yard box. The Hornets would double their lead at the 10-minute mark when a Trojans give-away led to a breakaway by India Pleasant.
“Credit to Alabama State,” Troy head coach Chris Bentley said. “They came out and put us under pressure. We didn't finish our opportunities and they did and that put us in a deficit and we had to pull our way out.”
The Trojans held the possession for most of the first half, with several opportunities on net, but didn't hit the scoreboard until the final two minutes. Williams, who controlled the left flank all game, sent a ball into the middle that found Samantha Morgan who passed it off to Maddie Tieken for the goal.
Troy tied the game up in the 54th minute on a penalty kick by Alissa Jones. The Trojans earned the PK after two quick shots from inside the six-yard box were deflected, with the second falling to Nikki Stamaris who was fouled.
The Trojans took their first lead of the game less than two minutes later as freshman Katie Cersley scored an impressive header off a corner kick by Thorngren. Three minutes later, Thorngren got a goal for herself after receiving a pass from Williams and burying the shot from 12 yards out.
Williams picked up her first goal of the season in the 66th minute. After taking the ball in from a pass by Thorngren, Williams buried the shot in the lower right corner.
The Hornets brought the score back to within two, 5-3, in the 83rd minute, as McCleary picked up her second goal of the game on another breakaway.
“It's just a matter of time before we all start clicking,” said Williams. “We're already playing well together, so I just think with more time that everything will fall into place.”
The Trojans maintained the pressure throughout the game, controlling the majority of the possession. Troy outshot ASU 35-9, including 17-5 in shots-on-goal.
Troy was happy to host the U-12 Enterprise Football Club at Friday's contest.
The Trojans are back in action on Sunday, August 19, when they travel to Alcorn State. Kickoff is set for 1 pm.
