TROY, Ala. – The Troy Trojans conducted their final practice before the first scrimmage of fall camp Friday morning in a two-hour session.
The Trojans will take part in their first scrimmage on the new turf at Veterans Memorial Stadium beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. The scrimmage is open to the public.
Troy will hold its annual Fan Day on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. on the west concourse of Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Trojan Warriors Club will be providing free food and drinks to all those in attendance.
Troy has won a share of five of the past six Sun Belt Conference titles and is the only school to represent the league in five bowl games. Troy has 11 more Sun Belt victories than any other school in the league since the Trojans joined the Sun Belt in 2004. The Trojans also have a Sun Belt leading 84 all-conference selections and 38 first team all-conference selections over that same time period.
The Trojans open the 2012 season on Sept. 1 at in-state rival UAB in Legion Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. and the game will be televised live by Fox College Sports.
Season tickets for Troy's record six home games are available for purchase by logging on to TroyTrojans.com or by calling 1-877-878-WINS. Fans can also purchase tickets to Troy's six road games through the Troy ticket office.
Assistant Head Coach/Outside Receivers/Special Teams Coordinator Shayne Wasden
On special team unit through first week of practice
“Justin is back returning punts and Chandler Worthy is back return kickoffs so we do have those two guys back. But, we did lose our kicker, snapper, and punter. We have three really capable guys in Will Scott, Jed Solomon, and Ryan Kay. Will and Jed are really battling for the kicking spot. Ryan Kay is a freshman and is having a really good camp himself.
On Saturday's scrimmage
“Well, we are going to try to get some good work done. It is always important to get it done in a game type situation. You really don't know until you get to that first game exactly what you're going to have and if those guys are going to be able to perform under that pressure. Our snappers of course, we are looking to see how they are going to get that ball back there to us. That is an important spot of anywhere.”
Wide Receiver/Punt Returner Justin Albert
On the special teams unit
“We are working hard to find the guys who are going to get the job done. With me having a little experience the coaches feel comfortable with me back there. Last year I got a lot of experience, a couple of good returns, you know but this year I'm looking forward. Earlier in the year I had a couple of jitters last year, but this year I feel comfortable. It's a great spot for me and I hope the special teams can be a big part of this team.”
On punt returns
“Honestly, making quick moves when you catch the ball, making the first guy is the most important thing. Nine times out of 10 you make the first guy miss, nine times out of 10 you'll have a good return. My goal is to be the best punt returner in the nation.”
On offense heading into Saturday's scrimmage
“A lot of guys catching a lot of balls. Corey is spreading it around really well. Tomorrow I think we are going to do really good. We've got a lot of expectations for a lot of players heading into tomorrow.”
On team chemistry
“This year I feel like it's a brotherhood. Team chemistry is really good. Yesterday, I was talking to him about team chemistry and I feel like we are stronger and closer together.”
On depth at wide receiver
“Last year, even with myself, we had a lack of experience. This year we have a lot of experience form wide receivers, to defensive backs, to linebackers; to quarterbacks we've got a lot of experience. Hopefully this year we can get on top and stay on top."
