Troy Downs South Alabama for Fourth Straight Sun Belt Series Victory; Earn Six Seed at SBC Tournament

TROY, Ala. – Tyler Hannah had three hits, including a two-run homer, to lead Troy past South Alabama 8-5 on the final day of the regular season Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field. The victory locked the Trojans into the number six seed in the Sun Belt Tournament next week and gave Troy its fourth straight Sun Belt series victory.
The Trojans entered Saturday's action needing either a victory over the Jaguars or a UALR loss to Arkansas State to qualify for the Sun Belt Tournament. Arkansas State defeated UALR 7-3 while the Trojans were taking batting practice to lock Troy's spot in the eight-team field.
Troy will open play at the Sun Belt Tournament on Thursday against FIU; the full schedule with times will be announced later Saturday or Sunday by the league office.
Hannah, who was one of four seniors honored prior to the game, put the Trojans on the board in the bottom of the first as he scored on a Danny Collins sac fly after leading off the inning with a single. He opened the third reaching on one of four South Alabama errors in the game and later scored on a Logan Pierce double to tie the game at 2-all.
Collins followed with a single back up the middle to score Pierce and give the Trojans (26-29, 14-16 Sun Belt) the lead for good at 3-2. Boone Shear, another senior, punched a single up the middle and Chase Mathis drove home the third run of the inning with another single up the middle.
Mathis finished 2-for-4 on the night as the Trojans belted out 12 hits. Jakob Nixon was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a two-run homer in the eighth to ice the game. Pierce also finished with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
The Jaguars (21-33, 15-15), who will be the four seed in the Sun Belt Tournament, pulled within one, 4-3, in the fourth on an single to left by Hunt Griffith.
Nixon led off the home half of the fourth with an infield single and Hannah followed with his fifth homer of the season to put Troy up 6-3. Jordan Patterson hit a solo homer with two outs in the fifth and drove in a run with a grounder in the seventh to pull South Alabama within one, 6-5.
Jake Harrell singled to left to lead off the Troy eighth and Nixon hit his third home run of the season and second of the weekend to cap the scoring.
Ryan Brady (2-3) picked up the win for the Trojans after allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings of work; he struck out four and walked two. Senior A.J. Howard worked a scoreless sixth inning and Nate Hill earned his fourth save of the season after holding South Alabama without a hit over the final 2.2 innings.
Payton Gardner (1-6) suffered the loss for South Alabama after he was charged with six runs – five earned – on nine hits in four innings.
