MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The 2011-2012 season for the Troy women's golf team has come to an end after play was completed on Wednesday at the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Women's Golf Championship.
After carding first and second round scores of 309 and 317, the Trojans closed out the tournament with a 307 to finish in eighth with a 933 at 69-over par.
Sydney Conrad finished with a season-best result in a tie for 21st, bettering her previous high of a tie for 28th. The Powder Springs, Ga. native opened play on the tenth hole with a birdie, and carded another on the 12th. Two bogeys, a double bogey, and a birdie allowed her to make the turn at one-over. Conrad entered the seventh hole at four-over, but a birdie on the eighth improved her score to three-over to finish the tournament at 14-over par, tied for 21st.
“We are very proud of our freshman, Sydney Conrad because she lead the team this week,” head coach Matt Terry said.
Sofia Bjorkman also began the day on the tenth. Four bogeys made for a four-over par to make the turn, and two additional bogeys and a birdie allowed Bjorkman to finish the tournament tied for 30th at 18-over par.
Taylor McGraw shot her best round of the tournament on Wednesday, firing a five-over par, 77. The first nine holes for McGraw were consistent, as she only carded two bogeys to make the turn at two-over. However, four bogeys and a birdie on the last nine made for a five-over par performance, to finish the event tied for 35th at 22-over.
Langley Vannoy carded her highest round of the tournament on Wednesday, firing a nine-over par, 81. Vannoy made the turn at just five-over, but a double bogey and two bogeys on the last nine made for a nine-over par finish. Vannoy finished the tournament tied for 35th at 22-over.
Haley Lawrence matched her score from Tuesday's round with a six-over par, 78. Lawrence cruised through the first four holes at just one-over par. A double bogey, and four bogeys resulted in a six over-par performance. Lawrence closes out her career in a tie for 48th at 31-over par.
“Everyone is just extremely disappointed with how we played this year at conference,” Terry said. “We just expected more. We won three events out of ten this season and that is great. Looking at this we won more events for the season than the other teams at conference and this week we just did not show up.”
No. 44 Denver captured its ninth consecutive championship, and also claimed the individual title. The eight-over par team score of 872 was good enough for the team win, and Rachael Watton won the individual championship in a playoff.
