MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Despite having three golfers in the upper-third of the leader board at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at the Shoals, the Troy women's golf team dropped to 50-over par after the second round of the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Women's Golf Championship.
After posting a 21-over par in Monday's opening round, the Trojans carded a 29-over par in Tuesday's second round to place them in ninth heading into Wednesday's final round of action.
Sydney Conrad, who entered the round tied for 12th, completed day two tied for 18th after an eight-over par performance. The Powder Springs, Ga. native started out on hole 10 with a triple bogey to begin the day. A bogey on hole 18 gave her a four-over par to make the turn towards the final nine. Conrad double bogeyed hole five, birdied the ninth, and bogeyed holes one, six and eight to finish the round with an 80.
After posting a 75 in Monday's opening round, Sofia Bjorkman carded a 10-over par, 82 in Tuesday's round. Bjorkman struggled with consistency as she carded two double bogeys, four double bogeys, and a four-over par on the sixth hole, after not posting anything worse than a bogey in Monday's round. Bjorkman's opened play with a double bogey, then rebounded with a birdie, but struggled on the last-half of the first nine to make the turn at five-over. A four-over par and two more bogeys allowed Bjorkman for a 10-over par performance, to place her tied for 27th.
Langley Vannoy dropped just one spot after Tuesday's round to a tie for 27th as she carded an eight-over par performance. The opening nine holes for Vannoy looked promising as she made the turn at two-over, but a collapse on the back-nine made for a disappointing finish with a score of 80.
Taylor McGraw was the most impressive Trojan on the opening nine carding two birdies and just two bogeys to make the turn at even-par. However, five bogeys and a double bogey on the remaining nine holes made for a seven-over par round to place McGraw in 40th.
Haley Lawrence, who sat in last after Monday's round, improved by 13 strokes in Tuesday's round to finish the day with an overall 25-over par, tied for 49th.
No. 44 Denver carded a team score of 293 to lead the 11-team field. Middle Tennessee sits in second at 22-over, 17 strokes behind the Pioneers. Florida International's Katie Mundy leads the individual field of 55 with a three-under par 141.
Troy will look to improve upon their standing in the leader board as they tee-off Wednesday morning at 8:40 for the final round. The Trojans are within reach of the top-six or more, as they sit just eight strokes behind sixth place Arkansas State.
