MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The Troy women's golf team carded a team score 309 in the first round of the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Women's Golf Championship as the Denver Pioneer's managed an even-par performance to lead the 11-team field.
Tonje Daffinrud, Kelly Drack and Rachael Watton all finished day one tied for second to lead the Pioneer's to the top of the leader board, as Troy's Sofia Bjorkman was the leading competitor among the Trojans.
Bjorkman committed just three bogeys on the first nine holes, and two birdies and two additional bogeys on the last nine allowed for a three-over par performance. Her three-over par landed her a tie for 12th after day one.
Sydney Conrad, who is looking to better her best finish of 28th, also sits tied for 12th after carding a three-over par 75. Conrad opened the tournament on hole 10 with a birdie, but a triple bogey on hole 11 sent her to two-over, and a later bogey on 18 put her at three-over to make the turn towards the last nine. Conrad birdied hole two, then bogeyed hole 6 to finish the day at three-over.
Langley Vannoy matched her season stroke average with a 77 in the first round to put her in a tie for 26th. Vannoy carded four bogeys on the opening nine holes, and three more on the last nine, but battled back on the eighth hole to finish at five-over.
Taylor McGraw finished round one in 46th after a 10-over par performance. McGraw committed one double bogey and five bogeys on the opening nine, then carded three more bogeys on the last nine holes to finish with a disappointing 10-over par
performance.
Haley Lawrence, who entered as one of the highest-ranked golfers in the Sun Belt with a 75.77 average, struggled in every aspect firing a 19-over par 91.
