TROY, Ala. – With the 2012 Trojan Challenge nearing its midway point, the Troy University football team will participate in phase one of its annual Trojan Olympics Thursday afternoon in Sartain Hall. The event is open to the public and will begin at 4 p.m.
The Trojan Challenge is a semester long competition designed to raise accountability within the Troy football team. Players will be awarded points for a variety of different tasks including – community service, perfect class attendance, earning positive feedback from professors and for work in the weight room. Players and teams can also lose points for demonstrating poor accountability.
The Troy players will take part in five events on Thursday to earn points for their teams. Phase one events consist of a bench press competition, 3-point shooting contest, slam dunk contest and touchdown celebration dance contest. The final event is a spinoff on Dancing with the Stars as each team has been paired with a Troy cheerleader and must do a one-minute dance.
“The players have responded extremely well to the Trojan Challenge,” assistant coach and Trojan Challenge coordinator Jeff Beckles said. “We are seeing a lot of guys step into leadership roles and the accountability within the team is at an all-time high. We've seen a lot of different teams win the weekly awards and our guys are doing really well in the classroom.”
Phase two of the Trojan Olympics will take place on April 13 on the turf in Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Trojans open spring practice on March 18 and T-Day is set for March 31.
