TROY, Ala. – The Troy football team will open spring practice on the turf of Veterans Memorial Stadium Sunday at 5:30 p.m. The Trojans will practice 13 times during the spring including three scrimmages.
“We've got a lot of prospecting to do. We've had a good winter and want to see who can carry that into spring training on the football field with fundaments and with the understanding that there are 11 guys out there and we have to be a team on every snap,” head coach Larry Blakeney said. “We need to try and find some way to find some chemistry before the spring is over and carry that into the summer and into training camp.”
The Trojans return 16 starters from last year's squad including four All-Sun Belt Conference players in wide receiver Eric Thomas, safety Brynden Trawick, defensive tackle Tony Davis and linebacker Kanorris Davis.
Also back is junior quarterback Corey Robinson who enters the season third on the all-time Troy passing yardage list with 6,687 yards which is just 1,000 yards shy of the school record held by Brock Nutter. He also enters the season tied for second with 49 career touchdown passes and can become the school's all-time leader in the category passing Sim Byrd with 20 touchdown strikes in 2012.
“The emphasis is turning this thing back around and getting back to championship caliber and to a championship level,” Blakeney said. “We have to go in shorts for the first two days so there is not much we can do except work on and polish the scheme. After that I expect it to be a physical spring, I expect it to be one in which we revisit everything that's ever won a football game fundamentally.”
Troy will hold three scrimmages during the spring beginning with the annual T-Day Spring Game on Saturday, March 31 at 2 p.m. For the second consecutive year the Trojans will travel to Phenix City, Ala., for a scrimmage during the spring. Troy's scrimmage at Central High School will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 6. Spring practice will conclude with a scrimmage on Saturday, April 14.
