MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama took advantage of five two-out runs to defeat Troy 7-2 and end Trojan pitcher Tyler Ray's win streak at 14 games Friday night at Stanky Field in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both clubs.
Ray's streak was tied for the longest in nation heading into the weekend and spanned 20 starts dating back to the season opener last season. His last loss came to Arkansas State in the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship game. The senior All-America extended his streak of consecutive innings without a walk to 30 in the game.
Brad Hook gave South Alabama (5-12, 1-0 Sun Belt) the lead for good, 4-2, with a two-out, two-run double down the left-field line in the home half of the fourth inning after Drew Cofield led off the frame with a single.
Nick Zaharion led a 12-hit attack by the Jaguars with three hits in four at-bats. Jordan Patterson, who put South Alabama on the board with a solo homer in the first, and Dustin Dalken each added two hits.
The Trojans (8-8, 0-1) put 10 hits on the board led by two each from Tyler Hannah and Austin Golden, but struggled to string hits together as they stranded 12 runners on base.
Boone Shear cut the lead in half, 4-3, with a double down the line in right field to score Logan Pierce who reached earlier in the fifth inning on a walk. However, the Jaguars struck on a Hook sacrifice fly in the fifth and then on back-to-back doubles and a two-run homer by Dalken in the eighth.
Jake Harrell put Troy on the board with his fifth double of the season in the top of the fourth after Golden kept the inning alive with a two-out single to left. All six of Harrell's hits this season have gone for extra-bases.
Phillip Byrd (2-0) scattered nine hits over 7.2 innings to pick up the win for South Alabama. He walked three, struck out four and allowed two hits before passing the ball off to Jamie Dennis who closed out the game for his second save.
Ray (2-1) went the distance for Troy and allowed seven runs on 12 hits. He struck out four South Alabama batters and did not issue a walk.
The teams will play game two of the three-game series Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
