HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Troy women's golf team claimed its first victory of the spring season today at the Lady Eagle Invitational hosted by the University of Southern Miss.
Troy entered today's final round with a five-stroke lead, and completed the 36-hole tournament with a nine-stroke advantage. The
Trojans were led by strong performances from Haley Lawrence, Sofia Bjorkman and Langley Vannoy.
Lawrence carded a second round five-over par 77 and ended the tournament with a two-round total of 150, tied for fourth (73-77-150). The Prattville, Ala. native said she was proud of the tournament win, but that there is more potential for the team.
“I came into the fourteenth hole at one-over and I bogeyed the last four holes,” said Lawrence. “We got by with a win today which is great because we played well yesterday, but I know as a team we could have finished better today.“
Bjorkman also finished tied for fourth after a second round score of 76 (74-76-150).
“I hit it well all week, but I am still struggling with my putting,” said Bjorkman. “Today, I started off three-over after five holes, and that was due to my putting. I fought back to get it to two-over par and then finished with two bogeys. I am pleased with how I am hitting and waiting on my putting to turn around.”
After completing yesterday's round tied for fourth, Vannoy shot a seven-over 79 today to finish the tournament tied for eighth. Vannoy completed the Lady Eagle Invitational at eight-over par with a two round total of 152.
Taylor McGraw carded a second round 76 to end her day tied for 19th (81-76-157), while teammate Sydney Conrad finished the tournament at 28-over par, tied for 60th (87-85-172). Sara Fennvik tied for 46th (85-82-167), but was not counted into the team's statistics.
The Trojans return to action Friday, Mar. 16 through Sunday, Mar. 18 when they travel to Augusta, Ga. to compete in the Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate hosted by Augusta State University.
“I am proud of all the girls for going out there and taking care of business,” said Head Coach Matt Terry. "This will be a good carry over into our next event and it will make the van ride to Augusta better.”
