Three Troy women's golfers were presented with their National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Golf Team awards at a ceremony on Feb. 4. Liz Balkcom, Sara Fennvik and Haley Lawrence were recognized for maintaining a 3.5 grade-point-average or higher and competing in at least 50 percent of Troy's tournaments last year.
Balkcom received the award based on her GPA from her senior year of eligibility. She graduated in the spring of 2011 with a degree in speech communications and is current pursuing her master's degree in public administration at Troy.
“My years at Troy have been amazing and I would not trade them for anything,” Balkcom said. “It is not always easy being a student-athlete. Now that I have my degree, I have found that hard work and dedication do pay off.”
Fennvik, a junior from Gothenburg, Sweden, is on track to graduate with a degree in biomedical science in December 2013 and plans on attending medical school following graduation.
“It's all about work ethic,” Fennvik said. “We work hard in practice, but we also carry that into our studies. It is nice that people notice the hard work that we put in.”
Lawrence is in her final season of competition for the Trojans and is on track to graduate in December with her bachelor's degree in athletic training.
“It's a great honor to receive this award,” Lawrence said. “It is an honor to have been nominated for this award for the last three years. I am so grateful to have a coach that will work with my school schedule and still allow me to play on team. Since I am an athletic training major, in order to be successful, it was essential for Coach (Matt) Terry and my athletic training professors to work with me. Coach Terry and the athletic training staff have been extremely accommodating and I am blessed to be able to play collegiate golf.”
The Trojans open up the spring portion of their schedule Feb. 28-Mar. 1 at the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational.
