OREM, Utah – Another overtime heartbreaker sank the Trojans (5-8, 0-2 Sun Belt) at Utah Valley (6-7, 0-0 Great West), 66-64, on Wednesday night. Troy led by as many as five in the overtime, but could not hold on, getting out-scored 12-9 in the extra frame.
“The one thing we took away is that I thought we played every play in the second, defensively and offensively,” said head coach Don Maestri. “It was a very intense game. Now we have to crank it up and get ready for Florida Atlantic and the Sun Belt.”
Tevin Calhoun had an opportunity to get the win in the final seconds of overtime, but his corner 3-pointer was slightly off, leading to a Wolverines rebound.
Calhoun led the way on the night, hitting 7-of-15 shots and scoring a career-high 18 points. Both Ray Chambers and Emil Jones recorded double-doubles on the night, with each scoring 10 points. Jones, Antoine Myers and Hunter Williams each had four assists.
Troy shot poorly early on, but finished at 37.5 percent (27-of-72) from the field and 28 percent (7-of-25) from beyond the arc. Utah Valley was 27-of-58 from the field (46.6%) and 3-of-11 from range (27.3%). Troy won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding Utah Valley 41-39. It was an up-and-down game, with 16 lead changes, mostly in the second half.
Troy had an opportunity to win at the end of regulation, but Jones saw his 15-footer rim out, sending the game into overtime.
Troy got down early, trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half, but a 15-2 run near the end of the opening frame put the Trojans on top. Utah Valley would make a run of its own to close out the first half with a 28-25 lead. Calhoun was the bright spot for Troy in the opening half, scoring seven points.
The Trojans will enjoy a break for the holiday before returning home on Thursday, December 27 to resume Sun Belt Conference play at 7 p.m. against Florida Atlantic. Admission is free and donations will be accepted for the local Salvation Army.
