BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Troy volleyball team has enjoyed a historically successful regular season, but their true goals lie ahead in the next four days. The Trojans open Sun Belt Championship played on Thursday as the league's second seed looking for an NCAA Tournament berth.
It all starts for Troy (20-11, 10-5) on Thursday at 12 p.m. with a quarterfinal match against seventh-seeded Louisiana-Lafayette, and hopefully it all ends on Saturday in a 1 p.m. championship match that can be seen on ESPN3. All matches are being played at WKU's E.A. Diddle Arena.
All quarterfinal and semifinal matches will all be aired for FREE on SunBeltSports.org. Live stats will also be available on SunBeltSports.org for all matches.
The Trojans' regular season featured 20 wins, the first 20-win season for the program in a decade. It also featured 10 Sun Belt wins, the most conference victories for the Trojans in any league since moving to Division I in 1993.
One of the few bumps in the road came on October 20 in the form of a home loss to Louisiana-Lafayette. The Trojans did not play their best game that day, but they'll have a chance for revenge in Thursday's win-or-go-home quarterfinal match.
A Troy win would advance the Trojans to Friday's semifinals and give Troy its first ever win in a Sun Belt Tournament. Waiting in the semifinals will be the tournament's three seed, North Texas, or the sixth seed, Middle Tennessee.
Troy defeated North Texas in the two sides only meeting and defeated Middle Tennessee in both meetings. Friday's semifinal would be played at 4 p.m.
A championship match appearance would mark the first for the Trojans in any conference since moving to Division I in 1993. It would also mean the first nationally televised match in program history.
The eight-team, single elimination tournament features four quarterfinals on Thursday, two semifinals on Friday and Saturday's championship match. WKU, the tournament host, is the first seed after winning the regular season championship and finishing the regular season ranked 17th in the nation.
