NEW ORLEANS – Troy junior Will Scott has been named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his work against Navy this past Saturday, the league office announced Monday morning. The honor is the second of the season for Scott.
Scott was instrumental in Troy's 41-31 victory over Navy both as the Trojans place kicker and punter. The Lucedale, Miss., native booted a pair of second half field goals and took advantage of his lone punt attempt by pinning the Midshipmen on their 2-yard line with a perfect 38-yard boot.
Thanks to a potent Troy offense Scott didn't see the field until the second half of the game. The Trojans first drive of the second half stalled and Scott came in for his first punt of the game which he placed perfectly on the Navy 2-yard line.
The Midshipmen's triple-option attack couldn't move the ball deep in its own territory and Scott's punt flipped the field. Following a 7-play drive on Troy's ensuing possession, Scott booted a 25-yard field goal to give Troy a 31-21 lead.
With the Trojans leading 38-31 late in the fourth quarter, Scott iced the game with a 23-yard field goal with just 3:09 to play in the game.
Scott has now made 13-of-17 field goal attempts on the season and is tied for 10th on the Troy single-season list for field goals made in a season. His 76.5 field goal percentage would tie him for fifth with Super Bowl winner Lawrence Tynes on the Troy single-season list.
Troy closes out its home schedule on Saturday when it hosts league-leading Arkansas State at 2:30 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Stadium.
