MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy soccer team (9-10-2) was defeated by FIU (12-5-2) 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday on the campus of South Alabama. The Trojans end the season with the third most wins in program history, as well as the second highest finish in Sun Belt play in program history.
“We didn't put in the effort needed to beat a team like FIU,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “We are proud of what we have accomplished this year. The future is bright.”
The Trojans got down in the 15th minute, with Chelsea Leiva scoring her 11th goal of the season. Troy was forced to press and allowed a second goal in the 80th minute, as Kim Lopez found herself sneaking past the defense for the breakaway.
The young Trojans will look to build on their sixth place performance in 2013, with the majority of the key contributors set to return.
Erin Cersley, the lone senior on the field on Wednesday, finishes her career with 80 games played, the second most in Trojan history.
“We will miss her hard work and loyalty to this team,” Bentley said. “She is going to do great things in life and we are very proud of her.”
