Troy Student-Athletes Have Record-Setting Semester in Classroom

While the Troy University athletics department may be well known for the recent success of its athletics programs, another side that may not be as well known is that at Troy the “student” in “student-athlete” has been just as successful.
Perhaps that will change as over half the population of student-athletes at Troy were honored as members of the Student-Athlete Services “3.0 Club” for the fall semester. Out of 420 total student-athletes, 218 finished the semester with a grade-point-average of 3.0 or better.
The members of the Student-Athlete Services “3.0 Club” will be honored on Thursday, Feb. 2nd, in a ceremony that will take place during halftime of the Troy Trojans men's basketball game against the FIU Golden Panthers.
According to director of student-athlete services Matt Mayotte, this is the highest number of student-athletes that Troy has seen become a part of the 3.0 Club.
“It's incredible. It's a real tribute to the importance that our coaches are committing to academics and the efforts of all the staff in the office of student-athlete services,” Mayotte said.
Mayotte went on to say that he hopes that the Trojan student-athletes' success will reflect positively on Troy's commitment to academic excellence among student-athletes, coaches and others involved in student-athlete services.
“This is such a positive thing, such an important thing … it's the reestablishment of “student” in the student-athlete equation,” Mayotte said.
The individual successes of the Trojan student-athletes translated to team success, as 10 of the 17 athletic squads maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Those teams were baseball, men's and women's golf, soccer, softball, women's tennis, women's track, volleyball and men's and women's cross country.
In addition, five of the seven teams not included in the team 3.0 category increased their team GPA from the previous semester.
“There's a lot to be positive about,” Mayotte said.
Sandy Atkins, senior women's administrator for Troy also expressed pride in the academic accomplishments of the student-athletes.
“Academics are a priority for us … our coaches make it a priority and our student-athletes make it a priority. They just become more dedicated and get involved,” Atkins said. “The expectations are high and the student-athletes met those expectations.”
