As the new semester gets under way on the campus of Troy University, let's take a look back at the volunteer work done by many student-athletes during Christmas break.

Troy University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee arranged for student-athletes to take part in the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Christmas Party on December 2, 2011, at Park Memorial Church in Troy.

"The Troy University athletes were an essential part of the December 2011 Big Brothers Big Sisters' Christmas party. I was so overwhelmed and pleased by all of the eager athletes,” Miki Sheppard of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pike County said.

The student-athletes volunteered from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and volunteered to create a memorable evening for all of the children involved. Student-athletes donated money & gifts for the event. Also, they interacted with local children, signed autographs, and handed out presents.

“They all had very important roles. Some sat with our children that haven't been matched with a big brother or sister, some helped them make Christmas cards, some autographed posters, and some even played basketball with them,” Sheppard said. “The kids were so excited to be able to spend time with their local heroes. I am so appreciative to the Troy University athletes and hope that we will work together more in the future."
