Former Trojan Turns Professional

Former Trojan volleyball star Meghan Gilroy has signed to play professional volleyball in Italy. The 2010 graduate has signed to play with the Societa Sportiva Cuore in Reggio Calabria, Italy.

Gilroy, who was invited to join the Cuores earlier this summer, leaves this weekend to begin preparation for the season which lasts for ten months.

“Meghan was a special student and a special athlete,” head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. “I couldn't be happier for her and her parents.”

Gilroy will move to Reggio Calabria, the largest and oldest city in the region, which is located on the toe of the Italian peninsula and is also the second oldest city in Italy.

“We are really proud of Meghan and her accomplishments,” Kirkpatrick said. “It was an honor and a privilege to be her coach for four years and I know she'll do great.”

The Cuore coaches spotted Gilroy while she was on the January European Exposure Tour with another former Trojan, Megan Henderson. The two traveled Central Europe for 10 days, practicing and playing matches against European teams.

Gilroy finished her four-year career at Troy in 2009 after leading the Trojans in kills for three consecutive seasons. In her senior season, Gilroy was named to the second-team All-Sun Belt team, the first postseason Sun Belt award ever given to a Trojan.

“I think Meghan's accomplishments bring a lot of notoriety to our program,” Kirkpatrick said. “And this just shows that it's an achievable goal for our players who wish to go on to the next level.”

The Pensacola, Fla., native finished her career with 1,447 kills, the third most in school history and a .323 attack percentage, the second highest in school history. Gilroy also finished as the Trojans all-time leader in blocks with 298 and block assists with 225.
