Troy soccer claims 7-0 victory and tournamant title.
TROY, Ala. – The Troy soccer team battled the elements and Alcorn State Sunday to walk away with a 7-0 victory as well as Trojan Classic champions.
The Trojans (3-2) needed to score six goals against the Indians (0-3) to surpass South Alabama for the tournament title. Despite the soggy conditions the Trojans were able to do just that.
“We did what we needed to today to get a result and win the tournament ,” said head coach Chris Bentley.
The freshman Chelsey Williams got the Trojan attack firing early as she scored on the first shot of the day in just the 2'.
Freshman Alissa Jones was the second to attack for the Trojans as she scored in the 23' off an assist by veteran Maddie Tieken. The goal was Jones fourth goal in the Trojans' five games.
Nikki Stamaris sent the Trojans into half time up 3-0 as she scored her third career goal off an assist by Mary Morris.
Despite a comfortable lead at the half the Trojans came out just as strong in the second half.
Ashley Branham, who had not allowed a single goal the entire tournament, was relieved in the second half by newcomer Madison Winter. Winter continued Branham's success, not allowing a goal.
Maddie Tieken recorded a goal off of the assist by Chelsey Williams in the 71' and Senior Mary Morris would tack on two more goals with the aid of Corinne Crowley in 73' and 75'.
Morris is now second in career goals with 21. She is only two goals away from the current record holder former Trojan Jill Pinder who has 23.
Williams would close out the game with another unassisted goal in the 84' on a resilient play deep in the Alcorn State defense.
The win now gives Troy a two game win streak and momentum going into their next challenge: The Port City Classic in Mobile hosted by South Alabama.
“We have a lot of work still to do, and we look forward to getting at it this week,” Bentley said.
The Trojans are set to take on Austin Peay September 9, at 4 pm in Mobile, Al.
