Troy Track Program Showed American Pride on 9/11

September 11th is a day that holds many feelings for our nation. For most people, September 11th is a day of reflection of when our country was under attack. It is a day that will forever be remembered in all our hearts, and not just here in the United States but around the world as well.
This year, for the 10th anniversary of that tragic day, Troy University's track team wanted it to be more than just a memory. The track team wanted to honor the men and women who lost their lives that day.
So they took an event that happened 10 years ago and used it to celebrate our local service men and women by providing local fire and emergency workers with gift baskets of candy and snacks.
“The team got together and made this happen,” Track coach Jill Lancaster said. “They came to me with idea of serving the local community and I encouraged the project.”
The community service project was go across the board and was well received. Two members of the team were responsible for the idea. They are known around campus as 'The Twins.' Allison and Morgan Paulson are twins from Mobile, Ala and they are now in their junior year here at Troy University. They have been running on the Cross Country team since their freshman year, in 2009.
“Those girls are great,” Lancaster said. “If anyone can separate them, good luck! The two of them operate so beautifully together.”
Allison and Morgan came up with the idea of visiting all of the local police stations and fire departments on 9/11. They knew they could not do it on their own, so they solicited help from other members of the track team.
With more than 80 student-athletes in the program, the other members of the team opened the door to making the twins' plan into a reality.
Members of the track and cross country teams donated food, baskets and money to fill the baskets with goodies. The teams created baskets to give to the local law enforcement to show appreciation for their services and protection.
Multiple team members went out to deliver the baskets on Sunday afternoon to all the fire and police stations in Pike Country, including the University Police.
“Without the help of everyone, this wouldn't have been possible,” Lancaster said. “It's a great creative way to give a small token back.”
