GOLFWEEK PROGRAM CHALLENGE | LIVE SCORING
The Troy University women's golf team struggled to find birdies on Monday in the second round of the Golfweek Program Challenge at the Caledonia Golf Club in Pawley's Island, SC.
The Trojans managed to card just six birdies during their round and saw their overall score jump seven shots from the 303 they posted in the opening round on Sunday.
Troy's two-day score of 613 leaves the Trojans in ninth place in the 12-team field. East Carolina leads the way with a two-day score of 580 (+12). James Madison (581) is one shot back in second place, followed by Texas State (583) and Campbell (587).
Troy junior Sofia Bjorkman followed her opening round score of 73 with a 75 on Monday. Her round included four of the Trojans' birdies, but also included six bogeys and one double-bogey. She is tied for 16th overall in the tournament at six-over par.
Nicole Sakamoto of James Madison leads the individual field at two-under par (140) after posting an even par 71 in the second round.
The Trojans' other junior, Sara Fennvik, is two shots behind Bjorkman after a second round score of 78 that included three bogeys in her final five holes.
Troy's trio of freshmen – Sydney Conrad (+11), Langley Vannoy (+19) and Taylor McGraw (+22) – are still trying to get a feel for their first experience with collegiate golf.
“We are doing some good things, but we have too many big numbers,” Coach Matt Terry said. “You can see the potential this group has, but they don't yet have the confidence to realize how good they can be.”
The Trojans will open their final round of play in the Golfweek Challenge on Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. Troy is paired with Jacksonville State and Northern Iowa for the final round and will open on the back nine.
East Carolina leads the overall standings in the Program Challenge with a combined score of three-under par. The Pirates are just one shot in front of Campbell. The Trojans enter the final day of play in eighth place in the combined standings.
