Troy Dropped ASU 3-0 in Front of 434 at Sartain Hall

TROY, Ala. – The Troy University volleyball team posted a straight-set win over Alabama State in their home opener on Tuesday night in front of 434 fans at Sartain Hall.

“Offensively we did some good things, but I'm disappointed in our defense and ball control,” head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. “We need to get better in those areas as we move forward and work on it in the next few day.”

“I want to give a special tanks to the Sound of the South and the fans who came out,” Kirkpatrick added.

The Trojans (2-2) will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Macon, Ga., for the Bear Brawl hosted by Mercer. Troy will take on Mercer, Norfolk State and Tennessee State on the weekend.

TROY 3, ALABAMA STATE 0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-19)

The Trojans used a balanced offensive attack once again as Kayla Pickart, Breanna Cullity and Natasha Kolunija posted 11, seven and six kills, respectively. The Trojans as a team hit a season-best .384 on the evening including an .857 effort from Kolunija.

Alexandra Alexander posted 34 assists on the night while Courtney Cohen paced the Trojans with 15 digs.

Troy held ASU (0-4) to a .011 attack percentage and just 22 team kills. The Trojans posted 37 team kills.

The Trojans played a nearly flawless first set as they posted 13 kills to just one error, giving them a .706 attack percentage. Troy held the Hornets to just two kills as they took the opening set 25-9. Troy went on four different runs of four consecutive points or more, including 10 of the last nine.

In the second set, Troy took an early 10-6 lead and saw the lead grow to seven by the end of the frame at 25-18. Troy hit .333 in the second stanza while the Hornets only managed a .051 percentage.

Troy closed out the match with a 25-19 win in the third set while posting a .231 attack percentage. The set was tight at 10-10 but Troy used four straight to pull ahead 14-10 and held the advantage throughout.
