Since breaking ground on March 3, Whaley Construction Company, Inc., of Troy, has completed about 50 percent of the new $31 million Trojan Arena. The completed building will cover approximately 141,000 square feet.
"We have been working hard to make a lot of progress, even with the rain," Charles Ingram, Project Manager for Whaley Construction, said. "We have men working from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and some men working on Saturdays until noon."
The new arena is projected to be finished by the Fall semester of 2012 and, according to Ingram, the project is on schedule.
"When completed, Trojan Arena will seat 5,200 people for basketball, and provide 5,600 seats in a floor-use arrangement," Jim Bookout, Senior Vice Chancellor for Finance and Business Affairs and chair of the New Trojan Arena Design Committee, said.
The event level, or first floor, will include administration and locker areas for men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, and men's and women's track. It will also include 10,000 square feet of basketball practice courts.
The concourse level, or upper floor, will include the seating for general admission, as well as seven suites, including the Chancellor's Suite.
There will be a food court-styled dining area available that will provide specialty food items, as well as four souvenir and food kiosks located around the concourse.
A new VIP parking lot at the north end of the new arena will double as premium tailgate spaces for football.
"Sartain Hall has served us well for more than a half century," Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr.,
Chancellor of Troy University, said. "Enrollment growth and Division I athletics dictate a progressive step into the future. We believe a new arena will not only accommodate our need for more space but it will allow us to showcase our successful athletics program. The arena represents one of the most important investments we will make in Troy University for many years to come."
Financing for the new arena was provided as part of a $62.7 million bond issue that includes funding for the construction of the completed Fraternity Village, a University Housing project, and a new campus dining facility that is also currently under construction.
