Robinson Named to Davey O’Brien Watch List
7/15/2011 11:10:00 AM | Football
Troy University sophomore quarterback Corey Robinson had a remarkable first season running the Trojans' high-powered offense in 2010.
After winning Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year honors as well as MVP honors at the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, more is expected of the Troy signal caller in 2011. Those expectations have landed him on the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list for the coming season.
This year's list, which was compiled by a subset of The O'Brien National Selection Committee, features 38 of the nation's top collegiate quarterbacks who were selected based on player performance during the previous year and expectations heading into the 2011 college football season. Robinson was the only quarterback from a Sun Belt Conference program named to the list.
In addition to his other awards last year, Robinson was recognized as one of the top 12 players to watch for 2011 by the Columbus (Ohio) Touchdown Club at their annual awards banquet.
He ranked in the top 10 in the nation in 2010, and first among all freshmen, in completions per game (24.69), yards per game (286.62) and total passing yards (3,726). He also ranked 22nd in the nation in total offense per game (278.92), 30th in TD responsible for (12.92 points per game) and 38th in passing efficiency (137.90).
He threw for at least one touchdown in all 13 games, including a season-high four against Ohio in New Orleans. He directed four fourth quarter game-winning scoring drives during the season, including two (vs. Bowling Green and Arkansas State) that resulted in the deciding points in the final minute of play. He set Troy season records for pass attempts (505) and completions (321 - tied with Levi Brown) and produced the second most passing yards in a season in school history.
In addition to last season's finalists, Andrew Luck (Stanford) and Kellen Moore (Boise State), 2009 O'Brien finalist Case Keenum (Houston) is back in the action. This year's list also includes seven 2010 semifinalists: Matt Barkley (USC), Kirk Cousins (Michigan State), Robert Griffin III (Baylor), Landry Jones (Oklahoma), Taylor Martinez (Nebraska), Denard Robinson (Michigan), and Darron Thomas (Oregon).
Appearing on the Watch List is not a requirement for a player to be awarded The O'Brien. Quarterbacks from all 120 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools are eligible for the award until the field is narrowed to 16 semifinalists on Monday, Oct. 24. The Foundation and the Selection Committee will announce three finalists on Monday, Nov. 21. The 2011 Davey O'Brien winner will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 8.
The 35th Annual Davey O'Brien Awards Dinner will be held Feb. 20, 2012 in Fort Worth, Texas.
