Trojans Fall to Louisiana-Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. (TroyTrojans.com) – The Troy University softball team fell behind (No. 25/25) Louisiana-Lafayette early in the their winner's bracket game late Thursday night, falling to the host Ragin' Cajuns 7-3 in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at Lamson Park.
Louisiana-Lafayette (46-9) jumped ahead early in the contest as they scored three runs in the second inning, before TROY (31-26) answered with a single run in the third inning. The Trojans were able to get on the board after Michelle Hewett reached on a two-out walk, stole second and later scored on a Kelly Luquette single to through the left side.
After Christi Orgeron connected on her 21st home run of the season to push the lead to 5-1; the Trojans were able to answer in the bottom of the sixth.
Luquette drew a one-out walk, her 30th of the year, to set the stage for junior shortstop Nikki Hollett. The junior launched a 3-1 pitch into the left field bleachers to draw the Trojans within a pair of runs at 5-3. The home run was the 20th of the year for Hollett, as she became the third player in the Sun Belt Conference to reach 20 home runs on the year, and the sixth different player in conference history to achieve the feat.
Louisiana-Lafayette added a pair of runs in the seventh inning for the final margin.
The Trojans were held to a pair of hits, the single by Luquette and the home run by Hollett. Meanwhile, Orgeron went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and two runs scored, while Nerissa Myers and Katie Smith each picked up a pair of hits for Louisiana-Lafayette.
Ashlyn Williams (18-14) suffered the loss, pitching a complete-game and striking out six batters. Meanwhile, Ashley Brignac (28-5) picked up the win with a complete-game two hitter and seven strikeouts.
The Trojans will face WKU at Lamson Park at 10 am Friday morning, with the winner advancing to play Florida Atlantic at 3 pm that afternoon. The Trojans were originally supposed to play at 12:30 pm Saturday afternoon, but a mistake was caught in the bracket and changed Thursday night.
