TROY, Ala. (TroyTrojans.com) – For the first time this season, the Troy University track and field teams will host their own meet as they play host to the Coach O Invitational on Saturday at the Jesse H. Colley Track/Soccer Complex.
The Trojans are competing in the state of Alabama for the fourth consecutive week, but on their home track for the first time in 2011. The 13th annual Coach O Invitational looks to be another record-setting meet with the likes of in-state foes Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Auburn, Birmingham-Southern, Jacksonville State and South Alabama all competing.
Other teams competing this weekend include Bevill, Chattahoochee Tech, Florida A&M and Shorter.
“We are looking forward to competing at home and having good weather for this year's meet,” Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, Jill Lancaster said. “This will be a quality meet with the competition that has registered to participate, and there is nothing like sleeping in your own bed and competing at your home facility in front of the Troy Trojans family.
“This is a great opportunity for our community to see the student-athletes at TROY who are at the top of the conference and in the nation. Our student-athletes take an enormous amount of pride in representing in our house at the highest level.”
The meet will also be the last home meet in the careers of several student-athletes this weekend at TROY.
“Our seniors will have their last dance at home this weekend,” Lancaster said. “We are very proud of them and their excellent performance, both on the track and away. They are an example of the true Trojan Way. Our program is very thankful, for an alum and school record holder, Coach O who continues to support our program.”
The Coach O Invitational, over the past few seasons, has seen records fall by the wayside, including several last season in field events. The Trojans have already broken a pair of school records this season, and if those marks can be met at the Coach O Invitational, they will set new records as well.
Since 2008, 13 new facility records on the men's side have been set – including two last year in field events as Jason Jenson (hammer) and Jason Flanagan (javelin) of Coastal Carolina broke records. On the women's side, since 2008, there have been 12 new records set during the Coach O Invitational – including Trojan Tiphanie Baker setting a new record in the hammer.
The most records that have been recorded as being broken came in 2008, when 14 new records were set at the facility.
The meet begins at 10 am on Saturday morning at the Jesse H. Colley Complex, located on the campus of Troy University. Admission is free to the event. The top male and the top female collegiate student-athlete will be presented with a Coach O watch, courtesy of the meet sponsor.
Results will be posted once they become available.
