MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Winds gusting to 25 miles per hour off the Tennessee River caused scores to climb on the second day of the Sun Belt Conference Women's Golf Championship on Tuesday.
The Trojans were not immune to the fickle winds of fate, and saw their team score jump eight strokes to a 309 after an opening round score of 301 on Monday.
Middle Tennessee, FIU and South Alabama were the only teams to improve their scores from the first day of play at “The Schoolmaster Course”, which is a part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Shoals facility.
The Blue Raiders, who played the second round with Troy and Arkansas State, blistered the course for a one-under par team score of 287, a 13-stroke improvement over their opening round. MTSU was led by Morgan Hale who, despite having bogeys on the last two holes, finished the day with a three-under par round of 69.
Another Blue Raider, Karisa Akin, and Denver's Tonje Daffinrud, posted their second consecutive rounds of even par 72 and share the individual tournament lead with Denver's Kelly Drack, who fired a three-under 69 on Tuesday to tie for the lead.
The Pioneers (583), who have won eight consecutive Sun Belt Conference titles, maintained their grip on the tournament lead, but saw their advantage slip to just four shots over the hard-charging Blue Raiders (587).
FIU (592) is also in contention going into the final round after posting a second round score of 290. North Texas (594) slipped to fourth place with a second round score of 301 and UALR (595) fell back to fifth after posting a 302 in the second round.
Troy freshman Signy Arnorsdottir moved into the top 15 of the tournament with a team best second round score of two-over par 74. Junior Haley Lawrence followed her opening round 73 with a 78 on Tuesday and slid back into a tie for 19th.
Trojans sophomore Sofia Bjorkman had a chance to post a low score on Tuesday, but found trouble on hole No. 17 after having posted consecutive birdies on 15 and 16. She had a triple bogey on 17 and closed with a bogey on 18 to finish with a 79.
Senior Liz Balkcom improved by three shots on Tuesday to post a 78. Sophomore Sara Fennvick had a hard time in the heavy winds and finished the second round with a 90.
The Trojans will open play in the final round of the Sun Belt Championship on Wednesday morning at 8:10 p.m., weather permitting, on the 10th hole. The forecast calls for heavy rain and storms over night with scattered showers throughout the day on Wednesday.
Troy will be paired with Florida Atlantic and South Alabama in the final round. The Trojans trail FAU by one shot and own and one-shot lead over USA entering the last day of championship play.
