AUBURN, Ala. – One a chilly night when runs and hits were at a premium, it was the home-standing Auburn Tigers who were able to take advantage of their scoring opportunities to take a 6-1 victory over No. 21 Troy on Tuesday night.
The Trojans (19-5) remained winless in three road contests on the year while Auburn improved to 15-10 on the season.
The Trojans' three hits in the game were the fewest since being one-hit at UL Lafayette on April 9 last year.
Auburn scored in the fourth inning when Brooks Beisner hit a sinking liner toward second base that caught T.J. Rivera on an in-between hop. Rivera's error, his first of the year, allowed Tony Caldwell to score from second.
That one run spoiled an otherwise good outing for sophomore Shane McCain (0-1), who allowed the one unearned run on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Tigers added what turned out to be the winning run in the sixth inning against Troy reliever Nathan Hill despite the fact that Hill struck out the side in the frame. Back-to-back doubles by Caldwell and Casey McElroy plated the second run.
The early Tigers run made a winner of junior Will Irwin (4-1), who followed Auburn starter Jon Luke Jacobs and pitched two strong innings, allowing just one walk. Jacobs retired all nine Troy hitters he faced over three innings.
Auburn added four runs in the seventh inning thanks to three singles, three walks and a sacrifice bunt. Wes Gilmer had the big hit in the frame with a two-out bloop single into right-center that landed between three Troy defenders.
Troy scored its only run in the ninth inning thanks to an error, a balk and a wild pitch that allowed Daniel Peterson to score all the way from second base.
The three hits in the game for Troy belonged to Adam Bryant, who ran his hit streak to 12 games, Blake Martz and Drew Prichard.. Justin Fradejas had two of the Tigers' seven hits in the game.
The Trojans will return to Sun Belt Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Arkansas State. Game times for the series are set for 6 p.m. on Friday, 3 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
