TROY – Troy's outstanding young receiving corp. continued its strong play on Saturday, helping the Cardinal squad to a 34-21 victory in the annual T-Day spring game in Veterans Memorial Stadium.
"I don't think we got anybody seriously hurt," head coach Larry Blakeney said. "That was one of the prime goals of spring ball. I think there were a lot of good things. There is certainly a lot of work to do. I saw some guys out there today that haven't been here very long that can help us and some guys out there that have been here a while that can certainly fill the void. We've got a lot of production to replace on offense.
"There is a lot of work to do on and off the field."
Last week it was Eric Thomas and Jamel Johnson shining for the Cardinal side, but this week Chip Reeves, Corey Johnson and BJ Chitty joined in the fun.
Reeves led the way with four receptions for 94 yards and a touchdown. The senior from Stone Mountain, Ga. scored on a 39-yard pass from sophomore Corey Robinson.
Jamel Johnson also had a strong day scoring on a 35-yard strike from Robinson in the fourth quarter. He finished with 90 yards on two catches and had a 75-yard touchdown called back for offensive pass interference early in the scrimmage.
Chitty grabbed three passes for 55 yards, while Corey Johnson had three for 35.
"[T-Day] went good for us on both sides of the ball," Robinson said. "We got a lot of work done. We've got some new guys that are going to help us on both sides. I think Corey Johnson can help us. Then, guys like Jamel [Johnson] and Chip [Reeves] are out there making good plays on the deep ball. Right now, going into the summer we have a good plan, but we've got a lot of work to do before Clemson."
Robinson finished the day 18-of-26 for 321 yards and two scores. He also gave up one interception on an athletic play by junior safety Brynden Trawick.
TJ Mitchell added a pair of touchdowns on the ground to anchor the Cardinal rushing attack. He also had one catch for seven yards.
Jimmie Anderson led the way for the White defense with five tackles. Kanorris Davis totaled four tackles, while Rod Winston (3 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 deflection) and Xavier Lamb (3 tackles, 1 TFL) also had strong days.
The White team offense was led by running back Justin Albert. The former Prattville High School star ran for 49 yards and a score, while also grabbing two passes for 20 yards.
Additionally, Albert had three total returns for 52 yards.
Once again, K.D. Edenfield and Luke Barnes split the reps at quarterback. Edenfield had the better statistical afternoon, passing for 109 yards and a score on 8-of-14 completions. The Troy-native also scored on a 33-yard bootleg in the first half.
Edenfield's touchdown toss was to Hakeem Haynie. Haynie had a strong performance for the second consecutive week, grabbing three passes for 50 yards and the lone score.
Brach Bessant paced the Cardinal defense with seven tackles and a sack. Daniel Wyche and Johnny Gray both had five stops, while Joe Lofton had three tackles and an interception. The pick came off his former high school teammate Barnes.
The scrimmage concludes spring practice for Troy. The Trojans open the 2011 season September 3 at Clemson.
