HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Troy University women's golf team struggled over its final few holes on Monday at the Lary Eagle Invitational at Hattiesburg Country Club, but will enter Tuesday's second round within striking distance of the lead.
The Trojans made the turn at one-over par, but were 13-over on the back, with most of the damage coming on the par fives.
“We had to count two doubles on par fives and that really hurt us,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “They didn't play badly, with a 302 on the day, but they are good enough where they need to start posting really low numbers.”
Memphis owns the tournament lead after the first round of play after posting a 296 on Monday. Host Southern Miss is in second place, two shots back.
Marissa Steen of Memphis holds the outright individual lead in the tournament. She was the only play to post a sub-par score on Monday, finishing at one-under par 71. Belmont's Janet Steen is in second at even par. A pair of Trojans, sophomore Sofia Bjorkman and freshman Signy Arnorsdottir, are in a group of five players tied for third, two shots behind the leader.
The Trojans finished the opening round with a tournament-best 13 birdies, but they finished three over par on the par fives, Memphis was two under on those holes, accounting for five of its six shot lead over Troy.
“These girls are good enough to bust 300 every time the tee it up,” Terry said. “They have to want to do that, to finish a round and get it done. We should be leading this tournament because they are the best team here.”
Junior Haley Lawrence and senior Liz Balkcom are both tied for 17th individually after posting opening round scores of six-over par 78. Sophomore Sara Fennvik is tied for 22nd after an opening score of 80, eight-over par.
The Trojans will once again be paired with South Alabama for the second, and final, round of the tournament on Tuesday. The Jaguars are in fourth place in the tournament, but are 12 shots behind Troy. The teams will begin play at 8:30 a.m.
“We are within striking distance, but they need to go out and show how good they are,” Terry said. “I can see them going out and shooting a very low round tomorrow.”
