TROY, Ala. – The Troy University softball team will hit the field just two days after their season-opening conference series, hosting Kennesaw State University Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader beginning at 3 pm.
Troy (18-11, 1-2 Sun Belt) is coming off back-to-back losses to ULM in their season-opening conference series this past weekend at the Troy Softball Complex. The Trojans captured the first game in the series 3-0, before falling in the next two contests – including being no-hit through five innings on Sunday.
This is the only mid-week contest of the week for the Trojans, as they hit the road to face 19th-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette in a key Sun Belt Conference series in the early portion of the season. This is just the second mid-week contest of the season for the Trojans, as their only other came between the Eller Media Classic (Las Vegas) and Bayer CropScience Classic (Fresno). In that contest, the Trojans swept Cal-State Fullerton in a doubleheader.
The Trojans are led by junior Nikki Hollett (Melbourne, Australia/Wesley College) at the plate, as she still near the top in every major statistical category in the Sun Belt Conference. She is currently hitting .423 with 10 doubles, two triples and 15 home runs. She has also scored 31 runs, driven in 39 and is slugging .990 at this point in the season.
Junior Hayden Gann (Hoover, Ala./Hoover HS) is right behind Hollett in hitting after posting a .556 batting average over the weekend. Gann is hitting .406 for the season with seven doubles and seven home runs. She has also scored 20 runs and driven in 27, while slugging .698. The junior leads the team in on-base percentage at .477.
On the mound, senior Ashlyn Williams (Hattiesburg, Miss./Oak Grove HS) has recorded an earned run average of 2.24 with a record of 7-7, while allowing just 58 hits in 87 2/3 innings of work. She has also thrown nine complete games and struck out a conference-leading 126 batters. Meanwhile, junior Morgan Grove (Tampa, Fla./Tallahassee CC) has recorded a 2.55 earned run average with a record of 6-2, while allowing just 22 earned runs to cross the plate this season.
This will be just the second time the Trojans and Kennesaw State have met on the field, both times being a doubleheader. Last season, Kennesaw State swept the Trojans in Kennesaw.
Live stats and live video will be provided by the Troy University Athletics Media Relations Office for both games.
