PHENIX CITY – With just one week of spring practice remaining, the Troy Trojans completed their second successful spring scrimmage on Saturday in Garrett-Harrison Stadium.
Troy's roster was split into Cardinal and White teams, with many members of the first team offense assigned to cardinal jerseys, while multiple projected starters on defense played in white.
The Cardinal team emerged victorious 23-17 behind a big passing day from sophomore quarterback Corey Robinson. The Paducha, Kentucky-native passed for more than 300 yards while completing 20-of-29 passes.
The Trojans were able to get work for the entire roster and are starting to see some players emerge from the pack that could fill vital roles on offense.
“When you divide them up, you expect some stats, you expect some standouts,” Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. “Some guys might be over-matched in some spots. We had some good things happen. All of us got to play and we played a lot of snaps.
“We've got a lot of production to fill on offense at receiver. We had some guys that started showing they can do it on the grass, when it's live action. I think we've got a chance to be a really good football team. I'm excited about this team, I think we've got a chance to be good again, how good, I don't know. But we will find out early with Clemson and Arkansas.”
Robinson tossed two touchdowns on the day – one to Eric Thomas for 53 yards and the winning lob to Sam Haskins from 12 yards out. Thomas finished with 133 yards on four catches.
Leading the way for the White team was redshirt freshman wide receiver Hakeem Haynie. A native of Stone Mountain, Ga., Haynie hauled in four receptions for 103 yards and a pair of scores.
A pair of freshmen, Luke Barnes and KD Edenfield, took all the quarterback reps for the White team. The combined to complete 24-of-39 passes for two touchdowns and just one interception.
Kanorris Davis, Angelo Hadley and Johnny Gray recorded interceptions on the afternoon.
The Trojans will continue practice this week and conclude spring preparations on Saturday with the annual T-Day game at 2 pm in Veterans Memorial Stadium. Admission is free.
