MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy University women's golf team opened the spring season with a fifth place finish at the 2011 USA Lady Jaguar Invitational, hosted by the University of South Alabama and the Azaela City Golf Club this week.
The Trojans shot a final round 307, finishing with an overall total of 63-over par (928); 14 shots off the lead of eventual champion Samford University.
The Trojans finished seven shots back of Morehead State for fourth, and 12 shots behind South Alabama and Southern Miss – who finished tied for second. They also finished ahead of Sun Belt Conference foes, ULM (+67) and WKU (+97).
Freshman Signy Arnorsdottir and sophomore Sofia Bjorkman earned a top-10 finish, as the pair tied for 10th with a 15-over par 231 for the tournament. Arnorsdottir climbed her way into the top 10 after shooting a final round 2-over par 74; erasing a 9-over par 81 in the opening round. Meanwhile, Bjorkman entered the final round just three shots back of the leader; but fell to 10th after a 9-over 81 in the final round.
Junior Haley Lawrence finished just outside the top 15, as she finished with a 5-over par 77 in the final round. The final round resulted in Lawrence shooting a 16-over par 232, placing her 16th in the event.
Senior Liz Balkcom finished the event tied for 28th, as she shot a 21-over par 237; while teammate Sara Fennvik finished 50th with a 35-over par 251.
The Trojans had some of the best averages of the tournament, especially on the par-3s, where Lawrence was tied for the best average of the tournament. The junior shot even par through the par-3s during the tournament.
Meanwhile, Bjorkman shot the fourth-best average score on the par-4s, shooting 7-over par for the tournament; while teammate Annelies Anderson averaged 4.35 shots per hole on the par-4s for the week. Bjorkman registered six birdies on the par-4s for the tournament, the fifth most of any player in the field.
The scores of Bjorkman and Anderson the par-4s helped the Trojans shot the third-best score on the holes this week, shooting 54-over par on the par-4s. The only scores better than Troy's on the weekend were South Alabama (+52) and Samford (+53).
The Trojans return to action March 13 at the Limestone Springs Golf Club, playing in the Samford Intercollegiate.
