2011 TROY FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
The top two teams in the Sun Belt Conference will square off in a nationally televised showdown in Miami when the five-time league champion Troy Trojans face the 2010 co-champion FIU Panthers on October 25.
That game will be televised on ESPN2 with a 7 p.m. (CT) kickoff.
The Trojans will open the season with consecutive non-conference road games at Clemson and at Arkansas before playing the home-opener at Veterans Memorial Stadium on September 24 against arch-rival Middle Tennessee in the “Battle for the Palladium”.
It will be the first Saturday game between the two teams since the 2006 season.
“No matter when you play them, the game with Middle Tennessee is always an important date on our schedule,” Trojans coach Larry Blakeney said. “The fact that it is the first conference game of the year, as well as the first home game, makes it even more important.”
The Trojans will follow with a second straight rivalry game on October 1 when UAB visits. October's schedule also includes a trip to play UL Lafayette on Oct. 8 as well as a home game with ULM on Oct. 15 before the trip to Miami.
“Obviously, FIU has a very talented team returning this year and playing them in a nationally televised game should bring a lot of positive attention to our program and to our league,” Blakeney said.
Following the game with FIU, Troy will venture back out of conference play and will travel to Annapolis, Md., to face the U.S. Naval Academy on Nov. 5. It will be the first meeting for the Troy football program with one of the U.S. Service Academies and is also the first of a home-and-home series with the Midshipmen, who will play in Troy in November of 2012.
“Navy will be a challenge for us because the game comes right in the middle of our conference schedule and because of the style of offense they play,” Blakeney said. “With that being said, it is exciting for us to open a home-and-home series with such a tradition-rich program.”
The Trojans will return to Veterans Memorial Stadium for consecutive league home games against North Texas (11/12) and Florida Atlantic (11/19) before closing the season with road games at Western Kentucky (11/26) and Arkansas State (12/3).
Besides the FIU game, kickoff times and other television appearances have not yet been set for the 2011 season.
