Troy will try to avenge a five-point January loss to South Alabama when it visits the Mitchell Center on Thursday night.
The Trojans fell 83-78 to USA on January 27 due in large part to a career night from Jags guard Gary Redus. The Decatur native scored 32 points and hit 7-of-8 treys as Troy struggled to find an answer defensively.
Troy got a double-double from Bernard Toombs (14 points, 12 rebounds) along with 17 points apiece from Will Weathers and Regis Huddleston. Weathers added 11 assists for his fourth double-double of the season.
Toombs' big night sparked a string of three-straight double-doubles that he carries into Thursday night's game.
Another streak that was started in the first meeting with the Jaguars is one that carries some national implications. Guard Vernon Taylor hit his last five free throws in the earlier contest and has carried that streak through two more games.
The Cross, S.C.-native currently ranks third nationally with an active streak of 22 consecutive free throws made. Taylor trails only LaSalle's Earl Pettis (29) and Wisconsin's Jon Leuer (23). Both LaSalle and Wisconsin play on Wednesday night, so the senior could conceivably enter Thursday night's match-up with the longest active streak in the nation.
Taylor is Troy's leading scorer this season at 15.6 ppg and has scored in double-figures in four straight and 7-of-9 in 2011.
The Jags are led by Martino Brock (14.4 ppg) and likely Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Augustine Rubit. Rubit is one of just two players in the league averaging a double-double (13.2 ppg, 11.1 rpg). The other is North Texas big man George Odufuwa.
Redus is averaging 21.3 ppg in his last four games including the previous win over Troy.
South Alabama leads the all-time series 10-5, including a 5-2 mark in Mobile. Troy's last victory in the Mitchell Center was January 15, 2009. The Trojans hit 16-of-30 3-pointers as they cruised to a 94-70 victory behind 20 points from forward Kenny Ware.
Tip-off on Thursday night is set for 7:05 pm. Barry McKnight will bring you all the action on the Troy Sports Network by IMG College beginning at 6:30 pm with the State Farm Pregame Show.
