SUN BELT INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP
After a two week hiatus, the Trojans indoor track and field team will head to Jonesboro, Ark., this weekend to compete in the Sun Belt Indoor Championship.
The team has had some strong moments this season, with a sweep of two events in field events at Middle Tennessee in January, and strong showings from the runners at every meet.
School records were set across the board in the last meet the Trojans competed in, at Middle Tennessee. The improvements have been seen throughout the season and point to better marks at the conference championships.
The championship will get started on Sunday morning with field events at 10 a.m. Running events, mostly preliminaries, will beginning at 4 p.m. The competition will continue Monday morning with the throwing at 9 am and the finals for the running events at 1 p.m.
This year's team is young overall but the coaching staff thinks they make up for their inexperience by having a strong set of returning upper classmen which include the Sun Belt's Indoor Freshman of the year in 2010, Ja-Courtney Alexander.
"We are much younger across the board in experience than in previous years, therefore we expect to lean heavy on the returning veteran point producers to lead this team during the competition," Director of track and field Jill Lancaster said.
"The talent is there and we look forward to seeing our athletes achieve at the highest level."
The two-week break was important to the Trojans' preparation. Due to the colder weather in January, the team was not able to practice as much. The recent stretch of warmer weather has provided more opportunity to get outside.
"We have enjoyed close to two weeks of great preparation with the weather change," Lancaster said. "The spirit of the team has been lifted."
The coaching staff has worked on preparing the team for competition and they think the conference championship will prove as good to the team as it has in recent years.
"On paper, we are on the edge of putting points on the board in many events," Lancaster said. "Historically, we have put up more points than the stats predict. We expect to achieve the same this season."
