The Troy Trojans knocked off the Ontario Blue Jays, 12-1 and 2-1 in a fourteen-inning exhibition game at Riddle-Pace Field on Sunday afternoon.
“I was real pleased with the offense on the entire day, got a lot of hits and a lot of extra-base hits, more importantly I thought we played fairly good defense and the pitching overall was pretty sharp,” Head coach Bobby Pierce said.
In the second set of seven innings, Troy took a home a 2-1 victory, despite putting 10 hits on the board. Freshman Jo-El Bennett's RBI single to center field plated junior Brandon Brown to give Troy the lead in the bottom of the 5th.
Starter William Teal went three innings, striking two while surrendering a run on two hits.
The bullpen combination of A.J. Howard, Thomas Austin, and Tyson Workman would combine to allow just three hits in four innings of work, while striking out five Blue Jays.
Brandon Brown, Logan Pierce, and Tyler Vaughn all had two hits in the second portion of the exhibition. Pierce hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd to give Troy a early 1-0 lead.
In the first seven innings, Troy's offense exploded to score 12 runs on 13 hits off three different Blue Jays pitchers.
Every Trojan in the starting lineup had at least one hit in the first seven innings.
After falling behind 1-0, in the bottom of the first Boone Shear plated Tyson Workman after a fly ball to center was dropped by Derek Jones. Next, a Logan Pierce RBI groundout would give the Trojans the lead. Brandon Brown's RBI infield single would give Troy a 3-1 lead.
Starter Jimmy Hodgskin went three innings allowing just one hit and one run, while striking out four of the ten batters he faced.
Troy would add five runs in the third, one in the fourth, and three more in the bottom of the sixth to give the Trojans a 12-2 win in the first seven innings.
Pierce, Jakob Nixon, Josh McDorman, and Boone Shear all had home runs for the Trojans. Pierce led the Trojans with two home runs on the day.
Tyson Workman, Josh McDorman, Brown, and Danny Collins all had two hits in the first seven innings.
For the day, Pierce was 3-for-4 with three RBIs; McDorman was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs; while Brown went 4-for-6 two RBIs.
Troy will continue with fall practice this week and will open the 2012 regular season at Riddle-Pace Field on February 17 against Central Michigan.
