Trojans Halt Skid at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy volleyball team closed out a five-match road trip by avoiding their fifth straight loss as they topped South Alabama, 3-1, on Thursday night behind double-doubles from Natasha Kolunija and Alexandra Alexander.
“We always play tight matches with South Alabama,” head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. “And tonight was no exception. I thought through the first three sets, we played very well.”
“They made the plays they needed to win game two and they played really well in set four,” Kirkpatrick said. “But a 13-2 run pulled out the win for us.”
“I'm proud of the team for sustaining a good level of play throughout most of the match,” Kirkpatrick said. “This was a total team win.”

TROY 3, SOUTH ALABAMA 1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-20)
Natasha Kolunija led the Trojans (13-8, 3-4) to a much needed win as she posted a double-double with 19 kills and 13 digs in Troy's four-set win over South Alabama (7-12, 2-5).
Kolunija hit .342 while posting her second double-double of the season. Brittany McClelland had a team-best .500 attack percentage with seven kills and just one error. Devin Von Pingel and Breanna Cullity each recorded nine kills for the Trojans.
Mailande Parker and Alexandra Alexander each saw time as the Trojans' primary setter as they posted 16 and 27 assists, respectively. Alexander added 11 digs to her 27 assists for another Troy double-double, her ninth of the season.
Courtney Cohen led the Trojans with 16 digs on the night while helping hold South Alabama to a .152 team attack percntage. The Trojans in comparison, hit .236 as a team.
The Troy defense led the Trojans through the first set as they forced South Alabama to a -.088 attack percentage while the Trojans hit .259 themselves. Troy jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and expanded the margin to seven at 14-7. USA fought back to within three at 17-14, but the Trojans went to take eight of 11 as they won set one, 25-17.
The Trojans actually hit a better percentage in the second set as they connected on 15 kills and just three errors for a .316 attack percentage. Troy led late at 20-15, but the Jaguars fought back to tie things up at 21-21 and take the set, 25-22.
The Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set and led wire to wire as they took the frame, 25-22. The Trojans were actually out-hit by the Jags, .244 to .216, but Troy overcame that to lead throughout.
Troy had to make a comeback effort in the fourth set as they trailed by as much as six at 17-11. The Trojans allowed te Jaguars to score just three more points as Troy went on the score the 14 necessary to take a 25-20 win in the final set.
